Will's Surgery

Will had surgery to repair a hernia about two weeks ago. It's something our pediatrician caught when he visited us in the hospital after Will had been born, so we knew early on that he'd most likely need surgery if it didn't correct on it's own. At 6 months when there was still no change, we met with our surgeon and decided to schedule the surgery. Thankfully the procedure itself went well, and was successful, but he did have some complications afterwards. When he was coming out of the anesthesia, he had a hard time breathing normally, so they had to put him on oxygen for 30 minutes...thankfully we didn't know it was going on, but when they told us afterwards what had happened, I was scared. Then to see our sweet little boy in pain and not acting like himself as he was wheeled into the recovery room, it was kind of a scary thing. For some reason his heart rate was really high for a few hours following the surgery, so they monitored him closely. I held him the whole time as he tried to sleep with doctors, nurses, and the anesthesiologist coming into the room every few minutes.

Thankfully, his heart rate slowly lowered to a more normal number, and we left that evening. We were so glad to be home. It gave me an appreciation, and more than anything - compassion - for children and families who have to spend days and weeks, and even months at a time in a hospital room. We were only there a day and we were exhausted! Thank you, Lord, for a healthy little boy and a successful surgery that is now behind us!
